Defective Vaginal Mesh Implant Lawsuits

Topics in this post

Learn why Endo International plc and many other medical device manufacturers are paying millions of dollars in vaginal mesh implant settlements and how these devices have severely harmed women. In recent years, patients have come forward reporting complications linked to eroding vaginal mesh implants, including chronic pain and organ damage. These claims not only pushed for mass settlements but also for federal regulators to tighten safety requirements in medical devices. As more research and data reveal how implants fail, the legal and medical concerns surrounding them continue to grow.

What Led to the $400 Million Vaginal Mesh Implants Settlement?

Endo International plc agreed to pay more than $400 million to resolve lawsuits involving defective vaginal mesh implants that caused serious pain and complications for thousands of women. The implants that were designed to support pelvic tissues and stress urinary incontinence started to erode, and the mesh material poked through the vaginal tissue, leaving many women with excruciating pain and long-term health effects due to organ damage. Endo International added the $400 million to its already 1.2 billion liability reserve tied to its Apogee and Elevate mesh implant models.

Rising Lawsuits and Liability for Vaginal Mesh Implants

Endo is not the only pharmaceutical company facing legal action over these implants; other manufacturers, including Coloplast, Boston Scientific, and Bard, are facing similar lawsuits, and the settlement amounts across these three manufacturers are 73 million across 900 patients. Earlier this year, Endo International agreed to pay approximately $830 million to settle an additional 20,000 claims.

These implants have been reported to cause organ damage, chronic pain, and other serious complications. The settlement follows an FDA announcement that vaginal mesh inserts must now meet stricter safety requirements due to the high risk associated with these devices. Medical studies confirm that there is a 9.6%  incidence of mesh erosion, with risk factors including larger vaginal incisions, higher body mass index, and sexual activity in a study of 510 pelvic reconstruction patients (Çetin Arslan & Arslan, 2024).

How Vaginal Mesh Implants Became So Widely Used

In 2010 alone, 70,000 vaginal mesh implants were performed in the U.S. The devices are placed through incisions in the vagina to strengthen the weakened pelvic muscle and support internal organs. While initially marked as a safe solution for pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence, many women began reporting serious complications, leading to an increase in lawsuits.
