“I don't like lawyers—you can tell I don't like them—but I love you guys. Yes, you're the first lawyers I can say I like.”
BACKGROUND
On February 8, 2023, James Landis was on his way to the Super Bowl LVII in Arizona, hauling a massive LED display manufactured by his employer. In Kiowa County, Kansas, a driver hauling an empty grain trailer ran through a stop sign and t-boned James. Despite the damage to his truck, James made it to the Super Bowl and returned home uninjured—or so he thought.
Back in Adel, Iowa, said James, “I went into work and tried to lift something, and it just brought me to my knees. And they were like, dude, you need to see a doctor.”
The crash had caused serious damage to James’s spine.
He needed surgery to mitigate the pain and prevent further damage. During the nine-hour operation, a surgeon placed a cage in James’s neck and seven titanium plates in his mid and lower back.
Physically disabled and unable to work, James went on workers’ compensation, which gave him an income “close to starving to death” for him and his wife, Emily. His claim against the grain hauler’s insurance company went nowhere.
“The other side wasn’t reaching out to me at all, and we were going bankrupt,” James said. “And I realized I gotta have somebody represent me, because these people aren’t taking me seriously at all.”
After contacting several lawyers near home, James felt discouraged. One firm refused a phone call and insisted James travel to their office, which was impractical and cruel given his injuries. He began to search for alternatives online and stumbled upon Lowe Law Group.
After a phone conversation with Case Manager Kaylen Cunningham, the Landises felt “highly comfortable,” said James. Lowe Law Group “…was ready to rock and roll from day one, and that’s what people need. Hurry up and wait doesn’t work, it puts a lot of people in a bad position. You guys were all gas and no break.”
James had faced hurdle after hurdle trying to obtain the accident report, his medical records, and other documents. After he signed with Lowe Law Group on July 16, 2024, things changed. “Once you guys got involved, all that treating me like s*** stopped pretty quick,” James recalled.
At Lowe Law Group, Partner Eric Hinckley, Executive Director Cayde Taylor, and Case Manager Kaylen Cunningham went to war for maximum compensation. Forced to respond, the grain hauler’s insurance company offered the Landises a $185,487 settlement, which wasn’t even close to adequate. Complicating matters, workers’ compensation placed a $130,000+ lien on the settlement for wages lost and medical bills they paid related to the accident. That would leave almost nothing for James and Emily.
“My biggest fear was the medical bills that were mounting,” James said. “They were huge, you know, hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Collectors were banging on the door, and James was nervous about going bankrupt. He communicated that stress to Kaylen. “She handled me very well, which is hard to do,” he joked. “She never really left me hanging, even though I’m a pain in the a**.”
During the case, Emily Landis faced her own challenge. “I had cancer last year,” she said, “and [Cayde] was right there. He didn’t have to be, but he was, and nobody in the firm had to be, but you guys were.”
Lowe Law Group handled all things case-related, giving the Landises room to focus on health. “I could think of myself and my needs when I had cancer,” Emily said, “and he could think of himself and his needs and me and my needs. He didn’t have to worry about all that was going on with the lawsuit.”
Meanwhile, James and Emily never felt out of the loop. “You guys stayed in touch the whole time,” Emily added. “It just made us feel protected, heard, understood, validated.” That mattered because, during a long battle for health and justice, “you start to feel like you’re going crazy, because doctors start dismissing you, and things just start going into a downward spiral when you get hit like that.” Although Emily didn’t necessarily expect or need validation from their law firm, “It was just a breath of fresh air, truly.”
RESULTS
In March 2025, Lowe Law Group won $984,651.37 for James and Emily—the policy limit and more than five times the insurance company’s original offer. Moreover, Lowe Law Group got the workers’ compensation lien dropped from $130,000 to $0.
The medical bills no longer stressed James and Emily. “Once I got my brain on straight and got Lowe Law Group signed up, that burden was taken away,” said James. “What we received was more than what we had expected. We were really blessed, and we were really surprised and extremely happy, because we have a very simple everyday life, and we can live it pretty comfortably now due to the money we received.”
Despite surgery and ongoing treatment, James still deals with severe back pain and is unable to work. Thankfully, the settlement means that he can afford to retire comfortably. As Emily put it, “The best result is the peace of mind that we feel now and knowing that somebody is always there for us.”
