Gadolinium MRI Lawsuits
Mass Torts Filed On Behalf of Injured Patients
Magnetic resonance imaging – more commonly called an MRI – is used in all sorts of medical practices and procedures as an accurate way to quickly diagnose internal injuries and some diseases. For years, MRIs were thought to be safe, but new evidence is suggesting differently when gadolinium contrast agents are used. Many patients who have been diagnosed with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) have also undergone repeated gadolinium MRIs, establishing a link between gadolinium and the potentially-fatal disease.
Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with NSF and suspect gadolinium MRIs might be the root cause? You could have the option to create a lawsuit as part of a mass tort against your medical provider and related healthcare partners. Thousands of patients all around the country are considering their legal options, and so should you.
What is Gadolinium & What Side Effects Does It Cause?
Gadolinium is a heavy metallic element with usefulness in specialized circumstances, such as enhanced contrast for MRIs. Doctors inject a gadolinium compound near the targeted bodily area. The compound, or contrast media, helps create better clarity in the resulting MRI, making it simpler to detect tumors, bone breaks, etc.
Commonly side effects of gadolinium compound injections are:
- Headaches
- Hives
- Vomiting
- Breathing troubles
However, repeated gadolinium use may trigger nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in some patients. It might also occur after only one use if the patient is sensitive to gadolinium, or if they have weakened kidneys.
Dangerous side effects of gadolinium contrast media use in patients include:
- Skin malformations
- Joint or muscle stiffness
- Chronic pain
- Blood clots
- Kidney failure
- Heart congestion

In December of 2017, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented new regulations on gadolinium injections and compounds. The agency noted a specific likeliness between gadolinium MRI and occurrences of the otherwise-rare disease of NSF. All healthcare professionals must be warned by gadolinium contrast media manufacturers of the potential dangers, and those medical providers must pass the warning along to their clients.
With the FDA warning and the dangers of gadolinium use known, the door to gadolinium MRI lawsuits has officially been opened. In fact, there have already been multiple gadolinium lawsuits, claims, and mass torts against major pharmaceutical companies. In 2013, a single plaintiff was awarded $5 million by a jury verdict in a case brought against GE Healthcare for the negligent use of gadolinium and the lack of warning given to patients.
